In the historic center of this breathtaking medieval town in the heart of Italy, with a blank piece of paper (laptop!) and no preconceived ideas, come and learn the craft and logic of writing for film. Learn how to take ideas from character, location, time, to dialogue, to plotting of story, to Full Film Form in a step-by-step, incremental process. With the beauty of Spoleto as the backdrop, focus on the visual component as an integral part of the craft of screenwriting. We will cover the screenwriting process as well as the screenwriter’s perspective on how the industry works.

As a bonus, in an atmosphere of creative camaraderie, enjoy an insider experience of Bella Italia, the food, the wines, the warm and friendly Spoletini.



The key elements of craft covered are:

• logic of character and dialogue
• the visual component
• transitions
• how to use a Step Outline to prove out your story, and
• the Treatment to prove out the plotting of story

There is a one-on-one individual tutorial every day and one day off.

Spoleto is a small and unbelievably charming city nestled in the hills of Umbria seventy five miles north of Rome. The city pre dates Roman times and has welcomed artists since the fifties when Italy was at the forefront of the modern art movement. For the past fifty years it has also been host to the famous Due Mondi Music Festival. With its gracious medieval architecture, its narrow cobble stone streets and balconies, oozing with flowers Spoleto is a cultural and visual feast.

The Fees/Costs: Tuition, private room with bath and breakfast, in a sixteenth century setting, daily lavish lunches, side trips and transfers from Rome, $3000.

Note: Since this is always a small group, only five to eight participants, early registration is recommended. A non-refundable deposit of $500 must accompany the Application Form. The balance of the payment is due one month prior to departure.
