New York City is synonymous with writing and Irv Bauer’s beloved book lined Greenwich Village home and writing studio are the quintessential writer’s setting.

In universities around the world and in his small-group workshops, Irv has helped hundreds of aspiring writers develop the craft of screenwriting.

This year, writers from all over are invited to join Irv in New York, as he clones the success of the Spoleto, Italy Five Week Summer Intensive in August, (in it’s seventh year and already booked out).

The New York two-week screenwriting intensive is limited to 6 candidates and will teach you how to develop your characters and take them from location and time, to dialogue and plot, on to story, with special emphasis on the visual. 

No matter what your level, by the end of the workshop, you will write a short screenplay in Full Film Form by following Irv’s proven step-by-step process.   In the individual daily tutorials, attention is paid to each writer’s particular needs.

 

Schedule:

  • Daily group session 10 a.m.-12.30 p.m.
  • Daily group lunch 1 p.m. – 2 p.m.
  • Daily evening one-on-one tutorials 5 p.m.-8 p.m.

 

The company of like-minded people from various parts of the world is what the essence and creative vitality of life in New York is all about.

New York Five Week Spring and Fall Workshops 

The foundation for all artistic effort depends on knowing your craft. In these ten sessions you will learn a simple process that takes you incrementally through the steps in developing your screenplay.

Organizing your material, flushing out the character, the story, the logic of telling a story in a visual medium. Every story has it’s own logic and only by mastering the tools of the craft will you become proficient enough to handle their different demands.

In this workshop you learn the core of the screenwriting process as well as how the industry works from the screenwriter’s POV. Whether you are a beginning writer or an experienced writer mastering the narrative visual form required for the screen is a challenge. Developing a character for film requires different responsibilities as does dialogue. Finding the screen story and shaping it visually are the keys to writing for film.

The key elements of craft covered are:

  • Logic of character and dialogue
  • The visual component
  • Transitions
  • How to use a Step Outline to prove out your story
  • The Treatment to prove out the plotting of story.

My teaching focuses on the craft of screenwriting so that the writer can articulate his or her work in full form and with confidence. You will have a reliable process, a way to work that will stand you in good stead for all your future work.
