Craft Of Screenwriting

Scriptwriting Workshops/Consultation/Development

“Irv Bauer is the best hands-on screenwriting teacher in the business”
Robert K. Wilcox – LA Screenwriter
Read what others say

Whether you are a beginning writer or an experienced writer mastering the narrative visual form required for the screen is a challenge. My teaching focuses on the craft of screenwriting so that the writer can articulate his or her work with confidence and in full film form. Developing a character for film requires different responsibilities as does dialogue; finding the screen story and shaping it visually, are the keys to writing for film. Understanding and articulating the visual component, translating what you see on to the page, is the key to writing a screenplay. Like any craft it takes learning, it takes practicing.

In my workshops you learn the core of the screenwriting process as well as how the industry works from the writer’s POV. You learn how to organize your material, which is often the stumbling block to successful screenwriting. I will show writers how to use a step outline to prove out story and the Treatment to prove out plotting, on the way to the finished screenplay. You will have a reliable foundation; a way to work that will stand you in good stead for all your future work.

Workshop Fee: $850 – 10 sessions

Scriptwriting Consultation for Stage and Screen

Inspiration will only take you so far. Most writers don’t have a story only they don’t know they don’t have a story. Most scripts I see are really only ideas for scripts or backgrounds with related incidents. Often screenwriters do not employ the logic inherent to the visual form; playwrights do not know how to use the stage. I will read your script and give you a written evaluation with specific insights and suggestions and an in person, or by telephone, follow up consultation to clarify any questions.

Fees: I have a $350 to $500 base fee, plus a student rate.

The Development Stage for Playwrights

The development of other people’s writing skills has been central to my philosophy of striving for good work. The Development Stage is a sympathetic, professional non performance environment in which the use of the elements of craft and logic, support and motivate writers to focus on their intention and rewrite their own work. Within two weeks in five sessions, as the conductor, I walk the writer through a continual process of questioning, with insights and stimulus, that allow the writer to make his or her own adjustments. The “non performance workshop”, is an invaluable part of the development period and is a process I began at the Minneapolis Playwrights Lab in the early ‘80’s.

"Non Performance" is at the service of the writer as the last stage of work, pre-production. “Non Performance” works for the writer and for the producer and is the missing link in the generally accepted approach to producing.

The modest fee is astounding when compared to the mini production, reading from scripts and without scenery, which passes for “development”, that can cost as much as $150,000 or more and is usually a waste of time and money.

Fees for Development Stage-Non Performance Workshop:
$7,000 and up; $12,000 and up for musicals.
Includes performers fees and workspace.
